Dear Fifth Grader,
This summer you get to choose your summer reading book from 3 great choices! Marcus Vega Doesn’t Speak Spanish, by Pablo Cartaya is a book about a boy's search to finally meet his father. A Wolf Called Wander, by Rosanne Parry based on the true story of a wolf named OR-7 who traveled a remarkable 1,000 miles across the Pacific Northwest. Last is a graphic novel, El Deafo, by Cece Bell that tells the story of a girl at a deaf school with a hearing aid that gives her a secret “super power” to hear everything her teacher says. Choose one book to read or enjoy them all. Complete the activities listed below for one novel.
Reading Response Activities:
1) Reading is Thinking: You will record your thoughts on sticky notes as you read the novel. Review the Reading is Thinking Handout and include 10-30 sticky notes in your book.
2) While reading this amazing novel you will complete a Character Analysis Chart for your favorite character. We will start the school year analyzing traits of the main characters. Character traits are the personal qualities that a character demonstrates such as bravery or loyalty.
Please read the directions carefully for completing both activities. We look forward to engaging in enthusiastic book discussions with all of you.
Happy Reading,
Miss Healey
